Quick Start Guide

Last Updated: January 30, 2026

Welcome to anonym.legal! This guide will help you get started in just a few minutes. We will show you how to find and hide personal information in text.

What Does anonym.legal Do?#

Imagine you have a document with someone's name, email, or phone number. Sometimes you need to share that document, but you do not want people to see the private details. anonym.legal helps you:

  1. Find personal information in text (like names, emails, and phone numbers)
  2. Hide that information so no one can see it
  3. Unhide the information later if you need it back

All of this happens on one simple page!

Step 1: Create Your Account#

Let us set up your free account.

  1. Go to anonym.legal in your web browser
  2. Click the "Get Started Free" button
  3. Type in your email address
  4. Create a password (make it at least 8 characters with letters then numbers, like MyPassword123!)
  5. Click "Create Account"
  6. Check your email inbox for a message from anonym.legal
  7. Click the link in that email to verify your account
  8. Done! Your account is ready to use

Step 2: Log In for the First Time#

Now let us sign in and see your free tokens.

  1. Go to anonym.legal and click "Sign In"
  2. Enter your email and password
  3. Click "Sign In"

Congratulations! You now have 200 free tokens to use.

What Are Tokens?#

Tokens are like credits or coins that you spend when you use anonym.legal. Every time you analyze or hide personal information, it costs a few tokens. The good news is that most tasks only cost 1 to 10 tokens, so 200 tokens can last a long time!

Where to Find Your Token Balance#

Look at the top right corner of the screen. You will see a number showing how many tokens you have left. On a phone, tap the menu icon (three lines) to see your tokens.

Step 3: Find Personal Information (Analyze Mode)#

Let us find some personal information in a sample text.

  1. Click "Anonymize" in the menu on the left side (or tap the menu icon on mobile first)
  2. You will see a page with a text box and some options
  3. Make sure "Analyze" is selected at the top (this is the mode for finding personal info)
  4. Copy and paste this sample text into the text box:
Sarah Johnson lives at 456 Oak Avenue, Chicago, IL 60601.
Her email is sarah.johnson@email.com and her phone is 555-987-6543.
She was born on March 15, 1990.
  1. Look at the list of things to find (called "entities") and make sure these are checked:

    • PERSON (names)
    • EMAIL_ADDRESS (emails)
    • PHONE_NUMBER (phone numbers)
    • LOCATION (addresses and places)
    • DATE_TIME (dates)
  2. Click the "Analyze" button

What Happens Next?#

The text will be scanned, and all the personal information will be highlighted in different colors! You will see:

  • Sarah Johnson highlighted as a PERSON
  • 456 Oak Avenue, Chicago, IL 60601 highlighted as a LOCATION
  • sarah.johnson@email.com highlighted as an EMAIL_ADDRESS
  • 555-987-6543 highlighted as a PHONE_NUMBER
  • March 15, 1990 highlighted as a DATE_TIME

This usually costs about 2 to 5 tokens.

Step 4: Hide Personal Information (Anonymize Mode)#

Now let us hide all that personal information.

  1. Switch to "Anonymize" mode by clicking it at the top

  2. The same text is still there with all the personal info found

  3. For each type of information, you can choose how to hide it:

    • Replace: Change it to something like [PERSON] or [EMAIL]
    • Redact: Remove it completely (shows as [REDACTED])
    • Mask: Replace some characters with asterisks (like S**** J******)
    • Encrypt: Scramble it so you can unscramble it later
  4. Click the "Anonymize" button

What You Will See#

Your text now looks something like this:

[PERSON] lives at [LOCATION].
Her email is [EMAIL_ADDRESS] and her phone is [PHONE_NUMBER].
She was born on [DATE_TIME].

The personal information is hidden! You can now safely share this text.

This usually costs about 2 to 4 tokens.

Step 5: Get Hidden Information Back (Decrypt Mode)#

If you used the Encrypt option to hide information, you can get it back later.

  1. Switch to "Decrypt" mode by clicking it at the top
  2. Paste your encrypted text into the text box
  3. Make sure you have the same encryption key you used before
  4. Click the "Decrypt" button

The original information will appear again! Only people with the right key can see the hidden information.

Try It Yourself!#

Here is another example you can practice with:

Dr. Michael Chen works at City Hospital.
Contact him at michael.chen@hospital.org or call 555-123-7890.
His employee ID is EMP-2024-4567.

Try to:

  1. Find all the personal information (Analyze)
  2. Hide it all (Anonymize)
  3. See how many tokens it costs

Quick Tips#

  • Start with Analyze: Always analyze first to see what personal information is in your text before hiding it
  • Check the highlights: Make sure all the personal information was found before you anonymize
  • Save your encryption keys: If you use encryption, keep your key safe so you can decrypt later
  • Watch your tokens: Keep an eye on your token balance in the top right corner

What to Explore Next#

Once you are comfortable with the basics, try these features:

Presets#

Presets are saved settings that let you quickly apply the same hiding options again and again. Instead of choosing options every time, just pick a preset and go!

Custom Entities#

Sometimes you need to find special types of information that are not built in, like employee IDs or product codes. You can create your own custom entities to find these patterns.

Desktop App#

Want to work with files on your computer? Download the desktop app to process documents, spreadsheets, and more without uploading them to the internet.
