When This Approach Has Limits

Affordable PII protection closes a real gap for small teams, but it is one layer of defense — not a security program — and SMBs should be clear-eyed about what it does and does not cover.

PII anonymization is not a full security stack. Tokenizing personal data before it reaches AI tools or shared documents reduces one category of exposure. It does nothing about phishing, unpatched systems, weak passwords, or the ransomware that hits most of the SMBs in these statistics. Treat it as one affordable control alongside backups, MFA, and staff training — not a replacement for them.

Detection is probabilistic and uneven across content. Accuracy is highest on clean, well-structured text and lower on scanned files, handwriting, and low-resource languages.
