Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Guide

Last Updated: January 30, 2026

What is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)?#

Two-Factor Authentication is like having TWO locks on your door instead of one. Here's how it works:

  • Even if someone knows your password, they still can't get into your account
  • You need your password AND a special code from your phone
  • It's an extra layer of protection that keeps your account safe

Think of it this way: your password is the first lock, and the code from your phone is the second lock. A bad guy would need both keys to get in!

Why Use It?#

  • Much more secure - Two locks are better than one!
  • Protects you if your password is stolen - The thief still can't get in without your phone
  • Required for some business accounts - Many companies require it to keep data safe
  • Peace of mind! - You can relax knowing your account has extra protection

How to Set Up 2FA#

Step 1: Download an Authenticator App#

First, you need to get a free app on your phone. These apps create special codes that change every 30 seconds. Choose one of these:

  • Google Authenticator - Works on iPhone and Android
  • Microsoft Authenticator - Works on iPhone and Android
  • Authy - Works on iPhone, Android, and computers

Just search for the app name in your phone's app store and download it!

Step 2: Enable 2FA in anonym.legal#

Now let's turn on 2FA for your account:

  1. Sign in to your account at anonym.legal
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Find "Security" or "Two-Factor Authentication"
  4. Click "Enable 2FA"
  5. A QR code (a square barcode) will appear on your screen
  6. Open your authenticator app on your phone
  7. Tap the "+" or "Add Account" button in the app
  8. Point your phone's camera at the QR code to scan it
  9. Your app will show a 6-digit number (like 123456)
  10. Type that number into the website
  11. Done! Your 2FA is now active!

Step 3: Save Your Backup Codes#

This step is SUPER important!

After you enable 2FA, you'll get backup codes. These are special codes that let you log in if you lose your phone.

What to do with backup codes:

  • WRITE THEM DOWN on paper
  • Keep them somewhere safe (like a drawer or a safe)
  • Each code can only be used ONE time
  • You usually get 10 backup codes

DO NOT:

  • Save them on your phone (what if you lose your phone?)
  • Share them with anyone
  • Throw them away

Logging In with 2FA#

Once 2FA is set up, here's how you'll sign in:

  1. Go to anonym.legal and enter your email and password like normal
  2. The website will ask for your 2FA code
  3. Open your authenticator app on your phone
  4. Look at the 6-digit code shown for anonym.legal
  5. Type that code into the website
  6. Click "Verify" and you're in!

Tip: The codes change every 30 seconds. If a code doesn't work, wait for the next one and try again!

What If I Lose My Phone?#

Don't panic! Here's what to do:

  1. Use a backup code - Remember those codes you saved? Use one of them instead of the 6-digit code
  2. Each backup code works only once, so cross it off your list after you use it
  3. Once you're logged in, you can set up 2FA again with your new phone

If you run out of backup codes:

  • Contact support at support@anonym.legal
  • Be ready to prove who you are
  • They'll help you get back into your account

How to Turn Off 2FA#

If you need to disable 2FA (though we recommend keeping it on!):

  1. Sign in to your account
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Find "Two-Factor Authentication"
  4. Click "Disable 2FA"
  5. Enter your password to confirm
  6. 2FA is now turned off

Warning: Without 2FA, your account is protected only by your password. We recommend keeping 2FA enabled for the best security!

Quick Tips#

DO:

  • Use an authenticator app (it's more secure than email codes)
  • Save your backup codes in a safe place
  • Keep your phone's time accurate (the codes depend on the correct time)

DON'T:

  • Share your codes with anyone
  • Store backup codes on the same phone as your authenticator app
  • Ignore suspicious sign-in alerts
